How we went from the entertainment industry to a Berkhamsted SEO agency

A Brief History…

I started mining the coalface of SEO, CRO and content creation nine years ago. At that time, I was running a small business in the entertainment sector. I decided to take over the digital marketing after seeing the size of the AdWords bill.

I re-designed the website, switching it to WordPress, and started to research the world of SERPS, SEO and importantly Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO). I looked at onsite and offsite optimisation, internal linking and content. I started blogging and then recruited guest bloggers to add relevant content. I soon found that content is king, and high-quality articles that engaged visitors became essential.
My business went from paying for conversions to totally organic traffic in three months. I took the company from the bottom of page eight on Google to third on page one. My role entirely revolved around SEO and online marketing, content and organic conversions. It had become my job and my life.

When my wife started her own business, I designed her website and managed all the SEO and digital marketing. It did so well that I was approached by more and more small businesses to manage their SEO, content and digital marketing. SEO started to become my main source of income, but to be honest I was doing it because I loved it.

I now run Hertfordshire SEO, a forward thinking SEO, content management and digital marketing agency. I am based in Berkhamsted, and have office space in various parts of Hertfordshire and employees dotted around the country. I love what I do, and I like to think we make a difference.

SEO? Online Marketing? What does any of that actually mean?

Seven or eight years ago, when I first got involved in SEO, it was relatively straight forward. You would want your domain to rank highly in google searches for X, Y and Z keywords. There were various things you could do on your site. Strategically placing keywords, a few decent links and many of the other things that we now take for granted as basic SEO.

Don’t get we wrong, those things are still important. But Google has changed, and it is now not nearly enough.

The search engine results page (SERPs) has changed, as Google looks to offer the best service to its’ users. Just take a look around. Unless you are in a serious niche, or can localise your business, you will find the first page dominated by mega brands and aggregate websites offering reviews and lists of services.

Why is that?

Google’s got a lot of data, and they’re utilizing it. It’s safe to say Google understands what users want by analyzing the massive amount of data it has.

Personally, I love the power of choice. I’d rather pick from a list of companies with reviews and comparison data than one that only includes websites that make it to the top of organic listings. I love reading reviews before I purchase, don’t you?

We have to face facts. We’re moving into the “pay-to-play” era with Google. Not too long ago, Facebook moved into the “pay-to-play” era. Now Google’s headed that way.
Google’s main source of revenue is advertising, counting for almost 90% of Google’s revenue in 2017. Google are a business, just like yours. They intend to maximise that revenue as much as they can.

They want you to pay.

So What Can You Do?

Optimise your website for the internet. It’s SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), not Google optimisation.

Twitter is a search engine. YouTube is a search engine. Amazon is a search engine. Pintrest is a search engine. I’m sure you are getting the idea.

Each of those platforms offers its’ own benefits to its’ users. Depending on who you are and what you do, we will attempt to use all relevant means to help you reach your goals.

All Hail The Hummingbird!

The release of Google’s Hummingbird algorithm Really changed things. Hummingbird was designed to help Google get to grips with semantic search and produce search results that are directly relevant to the search content. Before Hummingbird, it was all about matching keywords.

SEO is Dead?

This development resulted in SEO being labeled as “dead” in some quarters.  But in reality, SEO simply shifted firmly onto the production of quality content molded to user intent as Hummingbird attempted to solve searchers’ queries in one easy hit.
Subsiquent algorithm updates has continued to refine this approach, and lead to the Google mantra… Content is King!
